142,176 Miles. That is the number of miles that I flew in 2019. That is a sizable chunk of miles and the vast majority of them were flown in Economy Class. So this week I am throwing out three simple travel hacks for managing life in Economy Class as you travel the world.
First and foremost, for long flights, make sure you have a solid sleep plan. For me this includes a couple of components. I don’t trust my rest to an airline pillow in Economy. My personal favorite is the Banale 3-in-1 Omni-Pillow. I tend to be a head-fall-forward airline sleeper and this pillow comfortably wraps around my neck in a way that holds my head up. This combined with my use of Lavender Essential Oil Roll-On from doTerra helps me to rest well on those long flights.
Secondly, I am always amazed at how easy it is to become dehydrated on long flights. I have heard it said that you lose 8 ounces of water an hour when flying. That is why I alway bring my own refillable water bottle. It is easy to get it filled with filtered water, even from flight attendants on the flight. It sits safely by my side so I can keep myself hydrated and reduce the risk of getting sick.
And my third Economy Class travel hack is probably the most important one. It is this simple idea: Don’t let your miles you flew go unclaimed! With frequent flier miles now based on the amount you spent on the ticket rather than the number of miles flown, it still matters that you don’t let those miles disappear just because it takes a some effort to claim them. Case in point: We did Christmas in Paris as a family and the total cost per person for a round-trip ticket from Los Angeles to Paris for the three family members that had to join the three family members currently living in Europe was $83 each! Miles matter…and if you are already going to be flying, why not make it work towards your advantage. Paying $83 for a round-trip ticket to Paris makes flying in Economy Class much more enjoyable.
The biggest take-away I can give you about Economy Class hacks is this: Know what you’re willing to pay to get where you want to go. If you don’t really care about comfort, you will save a ton of money and be able to use that money elsewhere on your trip. If comfort along the way matters, then you are either going to pay for it though the nose…or you can use those miles you claimed for an upgrade!
