I consider myself a travel-hacking expert. My family is getting ready to go to Paris to celebrate Christmas, and I love the fact that I only paid $83 a ticket round-trip to Europe from LA! But I also acknowledge that every expert has a Yoda, and this is especially true for me with travel-hacking. My guru is Greg Lyons (@gregorylyons). His knowledge of how to get the best travel for the least amount of money is on a level I hope to attain one day.
On a recent trip to Nairobi, Kenya with Greg, he wanted to grab a meal together with some friends before we all went our different directions to catch our flights home. Now one additional thing you need to know about Greg is that he is a foodie in his own right. And when he told me that we were going to grab the best burger I have ever had in my life, I might have been slightly skeptical, but then again, Greg has shown that he is good for more than just travel advice.
Mama Rocks Gourmet Burgers–Kilimani Branch is located in a converted shipping container located in an artisan community in West Nairobi off Argwings Kodhek Road. When our Uber driver pulled into the parking area, I didn’t see the sign for the restaurant initially. As we got out of the car and saw where the restaurant was, I immediately fell in love with the place. There are a number of lounge areas that were essentially couches centered around tables. It felt both homey and fun at the same time. We sat nine of us around the table. I was told to start with their “Papa’s Poppin Potato Persuadian” which is their take on steak fries. The fries are amazing…but it is the sauces that you can order that are the game changer. With so many to choose from, we asked our server to surprise us and bring a few different ones for us to try.
As I looked at the menu, the “Sweet Mama” jumped out at me. It promised some spiciness and also said that it was, “Prime Cut Beef!” For kicks and giggles, I ordered a chocolate Milkshake to complete the ensemble. I was not only not disappointed, I was downright amazed at the burger that came out. It was not only the most flavorful burger I have ever had, it was cooked to perfection. The great milkshake that followed the burger down was also an amazing treat.
I know that most people will never read this post and then find themselves eating at Mama Rocks in Nairobi. That’s not actually the point of this post. The point is that I believe we have to remember that some of the best culinary experiences await us outside the safety and comfort of our home country. I owe Greg a hearty thanks for introducing me to the best burger I have ever had…and I was able to enjoy it because I have the amazing opportunity to choose to travel, and then step out of my comfort zone to try something off the beaten path.
Trust me…next time I’m in Nairobi I’ll be stopping by Mama Rocks Gourmet Burgers…it is already saved in my “Favorites” folder in GoogleMaps and in my Uber App ❤️ 😊 🚖
